‎FUTA STUDENT FOUND DEAD IN AKURE: UNIVERSITY URGES STUDENTS TO SPEAK OUT, SEEK HELP AMID INVESTIGATION

‎The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has called on students to speak out and seek support during difficult times following the death of a 100-level undergraduate, Favour Olaniyi, who was found dead near his off-campus residence in Akure, Ondo State.

The student, from the Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics, was discovered on Saturday in an apartment vicinity close to the university’s North Gate axis.

The incident was first reported to the university management, which immediately alerted security agencies for swift intervention.

‎‎In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, FUTA confirmed that police officers were deployed to the scene while university security personnel and medical officials coordinated the evacuation of the body to a morgue.

‎According to the university, the deceased’s parents have been formally notified, and the institution is fully cooperating with security agencies investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Adebanjo noted that preliminary responses from authorities indicate that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the incident.

‎He added that counselling and psychological support services have been activated for students affected by the development, stressing the importance of mental health awareness within the campus community.

“The university remains committed to supporting students and encourages them to make use of available counselling services when faced with challenges,” he said.

‎‎The Ondo State Police Command has also launched an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that officers visited the scene and observed no visible signs of violence on the body, adding that further forensic examination is underway.

‎‎The remains have since been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while detectives continue to gather evidence. Authorities have also renewed calls for young people to seek help during emotional distress and avoid actions that could endanger their lives.

‎‎Meanwhile, FUTA authorities say the institution is strengthening its student welfare and counselling structures as part of broader efforts to promote mental well-being and prevent similar tragedies on campus.
