UN MARKS NELSON MANDELA INTERNATIONAL DAY, URGES ACTION FOR JUSTICE AND EQUALITY

The United Nations has declared every July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day, calling on people around the world to honour the late South African leader’s enduring legacy of justice, freedom, and human rights.
In a statement, the UN said, “Madiba’s legacy of justice, freedom and equality continues to inspire people around the world still today.” The organisation urged individuals to take action in their communities, stating, “Each of us can learn from his legacy, and take action to create change and achieve a better future for all people.”
Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for opposing South Africa’s apartheid regime, became the country’s first Black president in 1994. He led efforts to unite a divided nation through forgiveness and reconciliation, famously stating, “I have walked that long road to freedom… I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities.”
Mandela championed equality, education, and peace throughout his life. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” he said— a belief reflected in his post-presidency work through the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Recognised globally as a symbol of resilience and moral leadership, Mandela’s legacy continues to drive movements for justice and equality worldwide.
