THE POWER OF PAYING ATTENTION: WHY OBEDIENCE ISN’T JUST ABOUT ACTION

Before obedience becomes a breakthrough, it must begin with understanding. Christian professionals are called to excellence—not just in performance, but in obedience.

Yet many stumble, not for lack of zeal, but for lack of clarity. Could it be that your next level is being held back not by disobedience—but by partial attention?

LISTEN BEYOND THE FIRST INSTRUCTION

We often say, “Obedience brings blessing.” True. But what if the problem isn’t disobedience—it’s misunderstood obedience? “Once have I spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongeth unto God.”Psalm 62:11

God speaks once, but an obedient heart hears it more than once. Why? Because true obedience begins with deep attention. Not just hearing, but understanding.

OBEDIENCE REQUIRES CLARITY

Many believers run with half-heard instructions. They assume, interpret, paraphrase— and misapply. But obedience without clarity is like a prescription without diagnosis—potentially dangerous. Eve fell, not merely because she was tempted, but because she quoted inaccurately. She added, “Neither shall you touch it” (Genesis 3:3) a detail God never gave. Her failure? She didn’t pay attention to the details.

“Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree… thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day… thou shalt surely die.”Genesis 2:16–17

DIRECTION FOLLOWS DETAIL

You can’t follow what you haven’t fully understood. Manoah, Samson’s father, shows us a better approach: “Let the man of God… teach us what we shall do unto the child.” Judges 13:8 He didn’t rush. He requested for clarity. And the angel returned to repeat and reinforce the instruction. Observation before execution. That’s wisdom.THE TRUE COST OF OBEDIENCE

What’s the real price? Attention. “This book of the law shall not depart… that thou mayest observe to do…” Joshua 1:8

Observe first.  Do, second! Meaning, you don’t just react. Reflect. Internalize. Pray. Ask. Obedience is a spiritual transaction. If you skip the observation, you might miss the blessing.

TESTED BY INSTRUCTION

In Jeremiah 35, the Rechabites were tested..And they passed, not because they were spiritual giants, but because they had memorized and internalized the instructions of their father. They didn’t flinch in the temple. They didn’t second-guess. They stood firm. Why? They had paid the price before the test came.

EVEN JESUS NEEDED STRENGTH TO OBEY

In Gethsemane, Jesus—fully God, fully man—prayed: “If it be possible, let this cup pass… nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.” Matthew 26:39. He didn’t disobey..But He also didn’t rely on strength alone, He prayed for grace to obey. Professionals, don’t rely on grit alone. You need grace.

WATCH. THEN PRAY.

The two-fold instruction to believers waiting for the Lord’s return is simple—but powerful: “Watch and pray.” —Matthew 26:4 Watch what?

  • Watch your convictions.
  • Watch your heart posture.
  • Watch your spiritual temperature—are you cold, hot, or just busy?

And then? Pray.  Because observation without prayer leads to pride. And prayer without observation leads to confusion.

The Climax: Don’t Just Hear. Become.“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin…”

Psalm 119:11

Before the Word changes your world, it must first change your heart.

Before you obey externally, you must internalize the instruction deeply.

When the Word is hidden, the heart is guarded.

When the heart is guarded, the mind is clear.

When the mind is clear, obedience becomes natural. The enemy doesn’t fear your activity—he fears your attention. Because what you observe, you become. And what you become, you can’t be talked out of.

THIS WEEK’S OBEDIENCE ACTIVATION

Ask before acting.

Observe before obeying.

Pray before proceeding.

Let this be your obedience order:

Observe. Obey. Become!

And remember—when next you hear God speak once, listen closely.

The second time is not a repeat. It’s a revelation, because in this kingdom, those who pay attention, are those God can trust with promotion.
