NIMET URGES NIGERIANS TO STAY WARM AMID UNUSUAL COLD WEATHER– HEALTH TIPS FOR AUGUST BREAK

Amid an ongoing spell of unusual cold weather, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has urged citizens to take climate-smart precautions to protect their health, especially as the country approaches the annual August Break.
Deputy General Manager of Public Weather Services at NiMet, Mr. Wasiu Ibrahim who made this known during an interview session with Radio Nigeria in Lagos, explained that while the current conditions may appear strange, they are in fact a normal feature of the season.

He noted that the weeks leading up to the August Break are typically marked by increased cloudiness, reduced sunlight, and a significant drop in temperature— particularly at night. According to him, this atmospheric pattern is expected and should not be a cause for alarm.
Mr. Ibrahim said that the drop in ambient temperature could lead to a rise in cold-related illnesses such as flu and respiratory infections. He advised Nigerians, particularly vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, to stay warm by eating hot meals and wearing warm clothing.
He emphasized the importance of staying informed, recommending that citizens follow NiMet’s official social media platforms for accurate and timely weather updates. Ibrahim added that being “weather-aware and climate-smart” was essential for public health during this transitional period.
While acknowledging that the cloudy, chilly weather might feel unusual, he reassured Nigerians that it was part of a predictable seasonal cycle. The most important thing, he stressed, was for everyone to take simple, proactive steps to stay healthy and comfortable.
Ultimately, NiMet’s message is one of preparedness and self-care: while the chill may be seasonal, the response must be intentional.
