NIGERIA NEEDS VISIONARY LEADERSHIP TO UNLOCK INCLUSIVE PROSPERITY

Regional Director of the Ford Foundation in West Africa, Dr. ChiChi Aniagolu-Okoye, has described transformational leadership as the key to addressing Nigeria’s deep-rooted socio-economic challenges.

Speaking at the 22nd Bi-Annual Leadership Lecture and Graduation Ceremony of the African Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development (LSD) in Abuja, she argued that Nigeria’s potential is vast but remains largely untapped due to a leadership deficit— not a lack of human or material resources.

“Visionary leadership is not just desirable; it is indispensable,” Aniagolu-Okoye asserted. “It is the driving force behind economic growth, social justice, and, ultimately, inclusive prosperity.”

Highlighting the systemic inequalities and social injustices that plague the nation, she underscored that these are products of the structures and policies shaped by those in power. “Leaders have the unique responsibility and power to reshape these systems through transparency, accountability, and ethical governance.”

Addressing the graduating cohort, she issued a powerful charge: “You are not simply stepping out of an institution; you are stepping into a critical role in Nigeria’s future. You carry the torch to transform ideals into impact and vision into tangible progress.”

In his remarks, Dr. Benson Uwheru, former Managing Director and CEO of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, harped on the urgent need for forward-thinking leadership. He pointed to global success stories— Singapore, the UAE, Rwanda, where disciplined and visionary governance has propelled economic transformation and social advancement.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s significant hurdles, over-reliance on oil revenues, infrastructural deficits, fragile institutions, and rising youth unemployment— Uwheru highlighted promising sectors brimming with opportunity: agriculture, the digital economy, manufacturing, and green energy.

He urged the nation’s leaders to embrace long-term strategic planning grounded in transparency, the rule of law, and robust investment in education, healthcare, and skills development. “Nigeria’s path to prosperity demands a commitment to visionary leadership that prioritizes sustainable growth and inclusive development.”

As Nigeria stands at a crossroads, the message is clear: unlocking the nation’s boundless potential hinges on leaders who dare to dream boldly and govern wisely.
