MASTERY AND MISSION: NIGERIAN PASTOR URGES PROFESSIONALS TO EMBRACE SELF-DEVELOPMENT

In a thought-provoking sermon delivered at a Sunday service in southern Nigeria, a senior church leader has called on professionals to embrace self-development as a pathway to relevance, excellence, and divine purpose.

Pastor Stephen Buraimoh, the State Overseer of the Deeper Life Bible Church (DLBC) in Ondo State South District, addressed a gathering of worshippers at the denomination’s campground in Pele, Ondo Town, with a timeless message: mastery opens doors— both earthly and spiritual.

His message, themed “Faith, Faithfulness, and the Fatal Fall of Gideon,” centered on the biblical figure Gideon— an unassuming farmer who rose to become a mighty military leader and spiritual deliverer of his people.

“Gideon was not idle or complacent,” Pastor Buraimoh said. “He developed himself and was ready when his moment came. That’s what made him usable in God’s plan. The same applies to us today, your level of preparation determines the magnitude of your impact.”

A CALL TO GROW IN A CHANGING WORLD

Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving global landscape, the pastor’s message struck a chord. He warned that without deliberate personal growth, even the most gifted individuals risk becoming obsolete.

“The world is changing quickly,” he noted. “Professionals who fail to upgrade their skills will be left behind. God is willing to help, but there are responsibilities He will not take on for us.”

Pastor Buraimoh challenged the growing trend of passive faith— where people pray for breakthroughs but neglect the hard work of self-improvement. “Faith is not an excuse for mediocrity,” he added. “God is a strategist. He promotes those who prepare.”

REAL-WORLD LESSONS FOR EVERYDAY ROLES

Using relatable examples, Pastor Buraimoh emphasized that excellence in any field— whether in ministry or the marketplace— requires commitment and intentionality.

Teachers, he said, must understand how children think and learn to be truly effective.

Mechanics must know the intricate systems of modern vehicles to remain trusted professionals.

Musicians and choristers must be trained in sight-singing and musical notation to serve with skill and passion.

“When you master your craft,” he stated, “you become indispensable. Excellence commands attention— whether you’re on the pulpit, in the classroom, or behind a workbench.”

Though delivered in a local Nigerian context, the message resonates globally. In an era defined by rapid technological change, economic uncertainty, and social mobility, the principle of lifelong learning and intentional growth is more relevant than ever.

Pastor Buraimoh’s sermon offers a reminder that preparation is the foundation of purpose— and that spiritual faith thrives best when paired with practical diligence.

“Don’t wait for doors to open by chance,” he urged. “Develop yourself so that when the door opens, you’re ready to walk through it.”
