JAPAN SKI LIFT ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF 22-YEAR-OLD AUSTRALIAN SNOWBOARDER

A 22-year-old Australian snowboarder has died after becoming entangled in a ski lift, leading to cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Hakuba Valley, a major winter sports destination in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

The accident happened on Friday, during a snowboarding trip with friends.

According to Japanese police and the lift operator, the woman’s backpack waist buckle became caught on a ski lift chair as she attempted to disembark.

Because the backpack’s chest strap was fastened, it did not detach from her body, leaving her suspended in midair as the lift continued moving.

Lift staff activated an emergency stop, and rescue teams provided immediate assistance. She was transported to hospital by ambulance but later died from her injuries.

The incident highlights a serious but preventable ski safety risk—wearing backpacks with secured straps while using chairlifts.

Experts warn that unsecured or fastened gear can become entangled, increasing the risk of falls, strangulation, or cardiac distress during lift operations.

Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co. expressed condolences to the family and said it would strengthen safety measures. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the death and is providing consular support to the family.

Japan is among Asia’s most popular snow sports destinations, drawing large numbers of international tourists each winter due to its renowned powder snow— making lift safety awareness critical for visitors unfamiliar with local protocols.
