INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLAY: HON. ABIOLA MAKINDE BUILDS CITY PARK TO CHAMPION EVERY CHILD’S RIGHT TO PLAY
As the world observes the International Day of Play, the call to recognize play as a universal right, not a privilege, has found meaningful expression in Ondo State, Nigeria.
In alignment with year 2025 global theme, “Choose Play– Every Day,” Hon. Makinde, a Member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, has stepped forward with a transformative initiative: the development of a public park dedicated to children’s recreation, learning, and well-being.
On December 27, 2024, Makinde officially commissioned the Ondo City Mini Park and Zoo, a multipurpose play and leisure facility designed to serve families across the region. With an affordable entry fee of ₦1,000, the park offers safe, inclusive spaces where children can explore nature, engage in physical activity, and enjoy moments of pure joy.
A SPACE BUILT FOR MORE THAN PLAY
More than a recreational site, the park reflects a deeper vision for community development. Featuring a mini zoo, play structures, and open green areas, the park also addresses a broader concern: the lack of secure, engaging spaces for children in many parts of Nigeria.
“This park isn’t just about fun,” said community member Prophet Opeolua Ayodeji during the launch event. “It’s a symbol of hope—an investment in our children’s emotional and social future.”
WHY THIS MATTERS NOW
Globally, experts continue to sound the alarm on the declining opportunities for children to play. According to UNICEF, one in five children aged two to four do not engage in play with their caregivers, a crucial gap that affects emotional bonding, cognitive growth, and social development.
The International Day of Play, designated by the United Nations, aims to spotlight this issue and mobilize communities and governments to take action. In Ondo, that action has already begun.
By establishing the city park, Makinde not only responds to international calls for child-centered development but also sets a precedent for grassroots leadership that listens and delivers.
COMMUNITY-DRIVEN LEADERSHIP
The park’s unveiling event, organized by Mr. Niyi and attended by local chiefs, traditional leaders, and residents from diverse backgrounds, celebrated more than just a new facility. It celebrated unity and a shared belief in building a better future.
Speakers at the event lauded Makinde’s consistent efforts in community improvement, including road rehabilitation, solar-powered lighting in schools, and expanded access to public services. “This is leadership that engages and delivers,” said one local elder.
A CALL TO ACTION: CHOOSE PLAY, EVERY DAY
As June 11 marks the official International Day of Play, stakeholders are reminded that promoting play is not solely the responsibility of governments. Parents, educators, community leaders, artists, and youth themselves can all play a role by:
- Hosting neighborhood play events
- Promoting inclusive play at schools
- Supporting local child-focused initiatives
The Ondo City Park stands as a living example of what’s possible when play is prioritized, not just for one day, but every day.
Hon. Abiola Makinde’s vision proves that meaningful change begins at home—with a swing, a smile, and the courage to imagine something better for every child.
