EPISODE 8:THE RISING COST OF DIABETES IN NIGERIA | WHY INSURANCE MATTERS
Insulin is expensive— but amputation is costlier.
With rising drug prices, many diabetic patients are struggling to continue treatment. Insulin— essential for many— has become increasingly costly.
In a country where medical costs continue to rise, Dr Olubusayo Modupe, Director of Health Insurance Scheme, Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Ondo urges Nigerians to prioritize health insurance, noting that patients can access free or subsidized drugs depending on their plan.
He also urged government to subsidize insulin and other diabetic medications, while encouraging communities, philanthropists, and politicians to support vulnerable individuals by helping them access drugs or enroll in health insurance.
“Support people when they complain. Help them get tested. Many Nigerians have diabetes and don’t know it,” he said.
He acknowledged organizations like Lions Club International, which actively promote awareness and treatment support for diabetes.
