EPISODE 10: DIABETES POLICY IN NIGERIA— WHY URGENT HEALTH REFORMS ARE NEEDED TO SAVE LIVES

As cases of diabetes surge and treatment costs rise in Nigeria, experts warn that without strong policies, local insulin production and affordable care— a silent epidemic will continue claiming limbs and lives.

A recent study by Dr. Olutoyin Elizabeth Okeya, published in the International Journal of Research and Review (July 2022), has revealed a worrying gap in Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) awareness and management in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

The findings highlighted critical socio-cultural, economic and religious factors preventing many residents from seeking proper medical care.

EPISODE 9: UNDERSTANDING CAUSES, RISK FACTORS OF DIABETES & LIFESTYLE CHANGES

As highlighted in recent ☝️episode, understanding risk factors and lifestyle changes is only part of the battle.

The research by Dr Okeya revealed that awareness of Type 2 Diabetes is still very low in the community. Many individuals rely heavily on cultural and religious beliefs instead of medical treatment— an approach that can delay diagnosis and worsen complications.

Health advocates warn that this trend poses a serious threat, especially as diabetes cases continue to rise across Nigeria.

According to the United Nations, 422 million adults now live with diabetes, a staggering rise from 108 million in 1980.

Globally, a new case develops every five seconds, someone dies from diabetes every ten seconds, and every thirty seconds, a limb is amputated due to complications.

The study by Dr Okeya strongly recommends intensified public sensitisation and health education across Ondo State. The State Ministry of Health is urged to lead large-scale community campaigns focusing on:

  • Early detection
  • Prevention strategies
  • Proper long-term management of T2D

The report noted that correcting misconceptions, is key to helping residents embrace scientifically proven treatment options as findings also reveal that income levels and diet affordability significantly affect diabetes management.

To tackle this, the study recommended:

  • Income palliatives for vulnerable patients
  • Clear dietary guidance for diabetes-friendly meal planning
  • Government subsidies or price controls to reduce medical expenses

These interventions, experts say, would greatly improve health outcomes and reduce diabetes-related complications.

Beyond government efforts, the report highlighted the need for support from:

  • Corporate organizations
  • Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
  • Philanthropic individuals

Similarly, The Diabetes Association of Nigeria— already active in patient education and empowerment— is encouraged to continue and expand its outreach, backed by strong government collaboration.

Correspondingly, Dr. Olubusayo Modupe,
Director of Health Insurance scheme, Ondo state Specialist Hospital Ondo, maintained that local production of insulin would drastically help reduce prices, he stated that “If we produce more within the country, cost will fall— and lives will be saved.”

As the young driver watched his former master limp away, he couldn’t shake the thought: If Baba Kudi had known the truth earlier— if he had been tested, educated, or supported— he might have avoided the embarrassment, the smell, and possibly the worsening state of his leg.

These series of episodes by JobethMedia highlights the role of awareness, prevention, and community support— and why stories like Baba Kudi in first Episode 👇
