“DESTINY AND DIVINITY: HOW OBA LADOJA’S LONG ROAD TO THE THRONE BECAME A STORY OF GRACE & COINCIDENCE”

Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan-elect of Ibadan land, has described his long-awaited ascension to the ancient throne as a testimony to divine timing and spiritual coincidence, saying, “Even though our system is structured and predictable, the timing is never ours. Only God decides.”

Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, made the remark during his first public address since returning to Ibadan following the passing of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. He expressed deep gratitude for what he called “God’s grace,” reflecting on the decades-long journey through Ibadan’s uniquely structured chieftaincy ladder.

A DESTINY WRITTEN IN NUMBERS

Striking a reflective tone, the monarch-elect noted an uncanny coincidence: he was born in 1944 and will now become the 44th Olubadan. “There were also many coincidences,” he told a crowd of supporters. “So I’m grateful to everyone.”

Observers and traditionalists alike have seized upon this numeric parallel as more than coincidence—a sign, perhaps, of destiny fulfilled. The symbolism has sparked conversations among Ibadan elders and spiritual leaders, many of whom view Ladoja’s emergence as ordained rather than accidental.

A BUMPY ROAD PAVED WITH FAITH

The path to Ibadan’s throne, governed by a strict hierarchical system requiring ascension through 36 chieftaincy titles, has taken Ladoja over 31 years to complete. He began the journey on October 1, 1993, when he was installed as Jagun Balogun of Ibadanland, just before being elected to the Nigerian Senate.

“It has been a journey of patience, perseverance, and the grace of God,” Ladoja said. “Many who started with me are no longer alive today.”

Upon his return to the city from a two-month absence, Ladoja’s first stop was his family compound in Isale-Osi, where he knelt in prayer, an emotional homecoming to where it all began.

A LEGACY OF UNITY AND PROGRESS

The Olubadan-in-Council, comprising 10 senior chiefs, gave unanimous approval to Ladoja’s nomination. He expressed deep appreciation, saying, “If they didn’t approve my nomination, what can I do?” He pledged a reign rooted in cooperation and shared progress.

Aare Egbe Omobalogun of Ibadanland, Chief Taofeek Adegoke, voiced optimism: “It is going to be a period when Ibadan will witness remarkable development during his tenure.”

Supporters and traditional leaders have praised Ladoja’s blend of experience, humility, and spiritual depth. Chief Adeola Oloko, his media aide, stated the coronation rites would soon commence, in collaboration with the Governor, Araba of Ibadan, and other stakeholders.

FROM SENATOR TO SOVEREIGN

As a former senator and governor, Ladoja brings rare political acumen to the revered position of Olubadan. His transition from political office to spiritual and cultural leadership has been seen as seamless by many—another sign, they say, that his rise is divinely orchestrated.

“He has proven leadership experience,” said Oloye Adeyemo Osundina, Mogaji Ile Gidigbi. “We are now witnessing the fulfillment of prayers offered decades ago.”

A NEW CHAPTER IN IBADAN’S HISTORY

With songs, drumming, and spontaneous celebrations continuing at his residence in Bodija, Ibadan, Oba Ladoja asked the people to support him in prayer.

“I seek your prayers for God’s wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to guide me in this sacred duty,” he said. “This is not about me. It is about Ibadan’s future, and I pray my reign brings peace, prosperity, and purpose.”

As Ibadan prepares for the coronation of its 44th Olubadan, many are looking not just to tradition, but to the hand of destiny, believing that in Oba Ladoja, both leadership and divine alignment have found a worthy vessel.
