BAUCHI ENDORSES SELF-INJECTABLE CONTRACEPTIVES TO EMPOWER WOMEN AND IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH

In a move aimed at minimizing side effects associated with other modern contraceptive methods, the Bauchi State Government has endorsed the self-injectable child spacing option, describing it as a safe and empowering solution for women across the state.
The endorsement was made by the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, during the biannual stakeholders’ meeting of the Delivering Innovation in Self-Care (DISC) 2.0 Project, implemented by the Society for Family Health (SFH), in Bauchi.
Dr. Mohammed stated that the self-injectable contraceptive is a modern and reliable method that supports women in preventing unplanned pregnancies, allows adequate time for rest between births, and promotes effective breastfeeding.
He explained that while the first dose is administered by a trained health professional, subsequent doses are self-administered by the user every three months.
He noted that the method is gradually gaining acceptance across all 20 local government areas where the DISC 2.0 Project is being implemented.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Managing Director of the Society for Family Health, Dr. Omokhudu Idogho—represented by the National Coordinator for Social Behavioural Change, Mr. Michael Titus—said the DISC 2.0 Project has trained maternal and child health coordinators in empathy-based counselling and provided them with digital tools to ensure continued mentorship for users.
He gave assurance that the contraceptive would remain available, especially in underserved areas, and commended the Bauchi State Government for fostering an enabling environment for the project’s success.
Some clients who participated in the meeting shared positive feedback on their experiences, expressing confidence in the safety and effectiveness of the self-injectable contraceptive.
With growing acceptance and government support, the self-injectable contraceptive is positioning itself as a practical solution for women seeking safer, more convenient reproductive choices in Bauchi State.
