LIONEL MESSI HONOURED WITH 2026 PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS AWARD FOR SPORTING EXCELLENCE
Lionel Messi has won the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, one of Spain’s most prestigious honours, in recognition of his exceptional football career, global influence and contribution to society through sport.
The Princess of Asturias Foundation announced the award on Wednesday, praising the Argentine captain’s sustained excellence on the pitch, leadership and philanthropic work. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup champion, was selected from 27 candidates representing 12 nationalities.
The award ceremony will take place in October in Oviedo, Spain, where Messi will receive a sculpture designed by Joan Miró, a diploma, an insignia and a €50,000 prize.
