7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT PROF. SEGUN AINA, NIGERIA’S YOUNGEST-EVER JAMB REGISTRAR
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), making the 39-year-old academic the youngest person ever appointed to lead the examination body.
Aina will take over from Professor Is-haq Oloyede when his second and final tenure ends on July 31, 2026. His appointment has drawn attention to his background in technology, education reform, and digital systems management.
Here are seven things to know about the new JAMB registrar:
1. He Is the Youngest-Ever JAMB Registrar
At 39, Professor Aina becomes the youngest person appointed to head JAMB since the agency was established. He is expected to officially assume office after turning 40 in July 2026.
2. He Is a Professor of Computer Engineering
Aina is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. He rose through academia with a focus on systems engineering, digital infrastructure, and technology-driven institutional reforms.
3. He Studied in the United Kingdom
The new JAMB registrar earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom.
He also obtained a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, alongside a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.
4. He Has Longstanding Ties With JAMB
According to the presidency, Aina’s relationship with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, where he gained firsthand experience in admissions administration and data management systems.
The exposure reportedly influenced his later work in examination reform and systems optimisation.
5. He Has More Than 15 Years of Experience
Aina has spent over 15 years working at the intersection of technology, governance, and institutional transformation.
He has advised federal and state governments on digital transition, operational reform, and systems design across the public sector.
6. He Has Worked With Major Examination Bodies
Beyond JAMB, Aina has consulted for several examination agencies, including NECO and NABTEB, especially in areas relating to ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital process management.
His experience in examination technology is expected to play a key role in modernising JAMB operations.
7. He Belongs to Top Engineering Bodies
Professor Aina is a member of several professional organisations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
President Tinubu said he is confident the new registrar will consolidate on the reforms introduced under Oloyede and further reposition JAMB for efficiency, innovation, and digital transformation.
