380 PREGNANT WOMEN, OVER 2,500 CHILDREN SEEK REFUGE AT MAKURDI IDP CAMP AFTER YELEWATA ATTACK

In the aftermath of violent displacement from Yelewata community in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, 380 pregnant women and 2,536 children are currently taking refuge at the Makurdi Ultra Modern International Market Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, according to the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA).

Camp manager Robert Nyom disclosed that the camp now houses over 5,294 individuals, spanning 2,336 households. Among them are also 233 elderly women and 181 elderly men.

Nyom emphasized that despite rumors, no children are being given out for care, stating that proper procedures must be followed and no such request has been received by BSEMA.

On resettlement, officials confirmed that the government has not initiated any return process to Yelewata and stressed the importance of ensuring safety, security, and well-being before any evacuation is considered. Displaced persons have been urged to remain patient.

BSEMA acknowledged continued support from government agencies, individuals, and NGOs, yet highlighted that more aid is urgently needed, especially as the needs of women and children remain pressing and unmet.
